Parents tend to worry or doubt their children can accomplish hard things and in The Silver Lake Kitchen we give them the opportunities, the tools and the permission with guidance.
These after school classes are all about building confidence in the kitchen by focusing on essential cooking and baking skills and hands-on techniques that kids can carry with them for life. From learning how to knead dough and handle a knife safely, to mastering baking basics and understanding how to follow a recipe—our goal is to empower your child with practical culinary know-how.
At The Silver Lake Kitchen, we approach cooking like a blend of art and science—a place for creativity, discovery, and hands-on learning. There is no pressure to eat anything; instead, we focus on the process and exploration, creating a relaxed, supportive environment. In our experience, this approach naturally encourages curiosity, and most kids end up trying (and often loving) what they make!
Throughout the months, we’ll be making a variety of fun and delicious recipes, and kids usually love what they create. That said, we understand that every child has different tastes and comfort levels. If your child feels uncertain about trying some of the foods we prepare, please reassure them that the real value lies in learning the skills—skills they can use later to make the foods they love at home!
We can’t wait to get started and watch their confidence (and creativity) grow in the kitchen with permission and guidance.

Hi, I'm Chef Mary, the founder & chef at The Silver Lake Kitchen. I launched the school in fall of 2022 with the support of the Silver Lake, Los Feliz & Atwater community.
I'm a certified chef and nutritionist with over 20 years of cooking experience. I've taught children and adults to cook through out my entire career.
